Leaving Work and Home Behind

Once again we have given up the conventions of living in a home and put our essential possessions in a small storage unit, to follow a path to a more expansive existence. We did some home-sitting for friends a month before leaving, and will go back there for a short time when we return in the spring. In the meantime, we are on the search for new ways of living.  We did this previously, in 2005, when we sold our home and went to New Zealand, staying for the entire year and learning more about ourselves, while experiencing a taste of fearless living. We have found that leaving the confines of home, and traveling for extended periods of time, reveals some of the root problems in our own undeveloped selves.  What may emerge is a process through which we can grow and enter into a new relationship with life, where we hope to find the essence of genuine fulfillment. We are also reminded that we have everything we really need in our backpacks. We will be travelling for the next four months, with some of the time well thought out and planned, though for many days we don't know where we will sleep, get our next vegan meal, or how we will get to our next destination.  We will be trusting the karmic interactions that are pulling us in the directions that we have planned to travel.

We left last Thursday, visiting with son Brian and Krista in their Brooklyn, New York flat.  Rick and I went to Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, the Museum of Modern Art, and walked around Times Square.  We even ventured into the downtown Toys R Us store to escape the cold for a few minutes, and found a full size ferris wheel inside the store along with a life size Barbie house, Wonka Land and a Lego section(my grandkids would have wanted to live inside).  Brian and Krista took us to two of their favorite vegetarian restaurants while in NY(Quantum Leap and Bliss--I liked the names as well as the food), and we walked through Central Park and went to the Guggenheim Museum(designed by Frank Lloyd Wright).  Sunday, Brian drove us to Connecticut to grandma's house where we are now.  Norwich, Connecticut, is filled with historic homes and a port where three rivers converge to make beautiful scenery, especially in the snow.  We have spent some time with Rick's brother, and will head to Florida next week to spend some time with Rick's brother John and to travel around the lower portion of the state. We will report from there next , as our journey becomes more wild in the warmer climates, and we have outdoor adventures to report. Our journey will take us to Hawaii, India, Italy, England, Scotland and Ireland and beyond.
